Cheaper, not riskier

Affordable movers in Denver: how to cut the cost without the risk

The cheapest safe Denver move is a weekday, mid-month, off-season booking with a permitted mover, a right-sized crew, and everything packed and staged before the clock starts. Published Denver figures start around $279 for a studio and $625 for two bedrooms. A quote far below the published floor, or one with no written estimate, is the thing to avoid, not the thing to chase.

We do not rank or recommend moving companies. Prices below are published third-party figures with their dates, not our quotes.

We are an independent publisher, not a moving company. Facts last checked . How we source.

What a low price looks like in Denver

Six named sources print Denver local-move prices for 2026. The low end of each band comes mostly from cost publishers modelling a short, easy move; the high end comes from Denver movers describing full homes with stairs and packing. "Affordable" in practice means landing in the lower third of these bands, not beneath them.

Hourly rates tell the same story. Denver sources print $130–$220 an hour for two movers and a truck, and $170–$270 for three. (Cost guide, hourly table; sources read 2026-09-29.) Because the bill is crew times hours, most savings come from cutting hours, not from finding a lower hourly rate.

The levers that actually cut the bill

1. Move off-peak

moveBuddha puts the peak premium at 20–30% for May–September, weekends and the last three days of a month. Discipled Movers says weekend and month-end moves in summer carry a 20%+ premium, and Movemasters prints $170 an hour for two movers Monday–Thursday against $200 on Saturday. (moveBuddha, Discipled Movers, Movemasters, read 2026-09-29.) A mid-month weekday in October is the kind of slot all three sources price lowest. Winter is cheaper again, but Denver's average snow season runs from 19 October to 28 April, so leave a weather fallback day. (NWS Boulder, read 2026-09-29.)

2. Watch the minimum and the start fee

Discipled Movers prints a 3-hour minimum; FreightWaves describes a two-hour minimum and a starting fee of about $262; Movemasters prints no minimum and bills in 15-minute increments. (Discipled Movers, FreightWaves, Movemasters, read 2026-09-29.) For a small studio move that might take two hours, a three-hour minimum is a 50% surcharge in disguise. Ask every mover three things: the minimum, whether the clock starts at the depot or your door, and the billing increment.

3. Pick the crew size on purpose

A third mover costs more per hour but can finish sooner. The sources price the jump from two to three movers at roughly $40–$70 an hour. If your move is a ground-floor two-bedroom with a short carry, two movers may be cheaper in total; with stairs or a long walk to the truck, three often are. Ask each mover to estimate both crews.

4. Remove the adders

Published Denver adders include $50–$75 per flight of stairs and $50–$100 for elevator moves (moveBuddha), and $75–$150 for a long carry (MoveAdvisor). (moveBuddha; MoveAdvisor, read 2026-09-29.) You cannot remove stairs, but you can book the elevator, reserve street space close to the door (Denver needs a DOTI permit for a truck parked in the street), and carry boxes down to a ground-floor room beforehand.

5. Pack yourself

Packing is the biggest single adder: moveBuddha prints $640–$6,400 by home size, and Moving Brothers prints $300–$800 for a small home. Packing yourself also matters in Colorado because the Department of Revenue lists packing and crating among taxable sales. (Colorado DOR, read 2026-09-29; home-rule city treatment not confirmed.)

Doing part of it yourself

Three hybrids cost less than full service, each with its own trade-off:

Rent a truck, hire labor

You drive; a crew loads and unloads. moveBuddha prints $172–$1,566 for a local DIY truck rental. See movers vs truck rental and labor-only help.

Use a container

You load at your pace; the company drives. Useful when the move and the new lease don't line up. See movers vs containers.

Movers for the heavy pieces only

Friends move boxes; a crew moves the sofa, beds and appliances in a short booking. Watch the minimum hours.

Who is liableWhen you drive the truck, the crew's cargo liability and the Colorado mover rules may not cover what happens on the road. Ask any labor crew in writing what their insurance covers when the vehicle is yours.

When a low quote is a warning sign

The Colorado PUC warns that using a mover without a permit "can potentially lead to the theft and/or insured damage to your property." (PUC fraud alert, read 2026-10-20.) A quote is a red flag when it comes with any of these:

  • No HHG permit number. A Colorado mover's PUC permit number starts with the letters HHG and must appear on every advertisement and every contract. The PUC regulates only moves inside Colorado; for interstate moves it points you to the U.S. Department of Transportation. (PUC, read 2026-10-20.)
  • A phone price with no written estimate. A Colorado mover must give a written estimate of the total cost, and the basis for it, at least 24 hours before a scheduled move, unless the move is booked less than 24 hours ahead. The mover cannot charge more than 110 percent of the estimate. (4 CCR 723-6-6608, read 2026-09-29.)
  • Cash only, or a large deposit. A Colorado mover must accept at least two of: cash, cashier's check, a valid personal check, or a credit card, and must list the forms it accepts in the contract. (PUC, read 2026-10-20.)
  • No contract before the work starts. Before work starts the mover must leave a contract that states its PUC permit number, itemizes costs and names at least two accepted forms of payment, and must have you sign a consumer advisement. (C.R.S. 40-10.1-505, read 2026-09-29.)
  • A price well under the published floor with no explanation, such as a very small inventory or a labor-only job.

Colorado rules that protect a cheap move

A permitted Colorado mover's low quote is protected by the same rules as an expensive one. The 110% cap means a $900 written estimate cannot become more than $990 on the day. A mover must deliver your goods inside the home once you pay the contract amount, and may never hold back prescription medicines, medical equipment, or children's furniture, clothing or toys. Refund disputes with a mover go to binding arbitration. (C.R.S. 40-10.1-506, read 2026-09-29.) None of that protection exists if the crew has no permit, which is why checking the permit is the cheapest step in the whole process. The verification guide shows how.

  1. Get three written estimatesSame inventory, same date, same access notes.
  2. Check each permitHHG number in the PUC permit search.
  3. Compare billing rulesMinimum, start point, increment.
  4. Book off-peakWeekday, mid-month, with a fallback day.

Common questions about affordable movers in Denver

What is the cheapest day to move in Denver?

A weekday in the middle of the month, outside May to September. moveBuddha puts the peak premium at 20–30%, and at least one Denver mover prints a lower hourly rate Monday to Thursday than on Saturday.

Is a cheap mover safe if it has good reviews?

Reviews do not replace the permit. Check the HHG number in the PUC permit search and insist on a written estimate at least 24 hours ahead; those are what give you the 110% cap and the right to your goods on payment.

Can I negotiate a mover's price?

You can ask for a weekday rate, a smaller minimum or a crew-size change, and you can compare written estimates. Make sure any change is in the signed contract; Colorado counts contract changes only when both sides sign.

Will you recommend the cheapest mover?

No. We do not rank moving companies. A quote request goes to permitted movers who cover your ZIP once our partner network is live; until then, we tell you by email if no mover covers your date.

Is renting a truck always cheaper?

Usually for small local moves, not always. Add fuel, mileage, your time, the street permit and any labor you hire. The truck rental comparison walks through it.
