Moving in Golden: Mines move-in, county roads and the mountain gateway

Golden has three things to plan around. Colorado School of Mines moves its first-year students in on 15–16 August 2026, when 17th Street becomes one-way. Addresses just outside the city limits fall under Jefferson County, which charges $50 for a container on a county road. And Golden is the gateway to I-70 and US 6, where trucks must carry chains from September to May.

Our form accepts Golden ZIPs (804). We have not signed a partner mover yet; if none covers your ZIP and date, we tell you by email.

Mines move-in dates, fall 2026

Colorado School of Mines fall 2026 move-in: first-year halls on 15–16 August; second-year apartments (1750 Jackson, Lookout) from 12 August; The Village at Mines Park from 31 July. (Mines Residence Life, read 2026-10-20.)

So the campus fills over about two weeks, not one weekend. Mines Park and the second-year apartments open first and let residents arrive when they like; the first-year halls follow on fixed days. Mines notes that arrival times are assigned and cannot be changed. If you are moving a student, book the crew around the assigned slot. If you are moving anything else in central Golden, avoid 15–16 August if you can.

Dates change every yearThese are the fall 2026 dates. Mines posts the next year's schedule on its Residence Life page in the summer.

17th Street and campus traffic

During first-year move-in on 15 and 16 August 2026, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., 17th Street in Golden becomes one-way, and Mines expected heavier traffic between Elm and Illinois and 13th and 18th Streets for afternoon events. (Mines Operations, read 2026-10-20.)

For a moving truck, a one-way street changes the approach, the side of the street you load from and how long the walk to the door is. If your pickup or drop-off is in that grid during those hours, tell the mover in advance and ask how it will route the truck. Mines' schedule also listed a road closure on Lookout Mountain Road on the morning of 21 August for the M Climb, so moves up toward Lookout Mountain that morning should be timed around it.

City of Golden or unincorporated Jefferson County?

A Golden mailing address is not always inside the City of Golden. Some homes in the foothills around it are in unincorporated Jefferson County, where the county, not the city, controls the roads. Jefferson County's own Transportation and Engineering office is in Golden, at 100 Jefferson County Parkway, which adds to the confusion.

  • Inside the City of Golden: the city sets its own street rules. We did not find a City of Golden permit written for moving trucks or containers, so we do not describe one; ask the city before you place anything on the street.
  • Unincorporated Jefferson County: the county's container permit applies on public streets (below).

Check your property's jurisdiction on your tax bill or the county assessor's record before you call anyone about parking.

Containers on unincorporated Jefferson County roads

In unincorporated Jefferson County, a dumpster, roll-off or other container on a public street needs a Temporary Container Placement permit: $50 (plus 2.5% by card), applied for online, with 48 hours allowed for review. It covers county roads only, not cities such as Golden, Lakewood or Arvada. (Jefferson County, page updated 1 April 2026, read 2026-10-20.)

The county's application asks you to read Section C of its right-of-way policy. Apply at least two working days before delivery so the review fits. The containers comparison covers whether a container suits your move at all.

I-70, US 6 and chain rules

Golden sits where I-70 and US 6 climb into the mountains, so a move from Golden to Evergreen, Idaho Springs or further west is a mountain move as soon as it leaves town. From 1 September to 31 May, commercial vehicles over 16,000 pounds must carry chains on about 1,400 miles of Colorado highway, including sections of I-70, CO 9 and US 40, 50, 160, 285 and 550. The fine for not carrying them is $500. (CDOT, 21 October 2025.)

Denver's average first measurable snow falls on 19 October and the last on 28 April. The 1991–2020 seasonal normal is 49.0 inches, with 8.8 inches in March. (NWS Boulder.) Those are Denver figures; conditions in the canyons west of Golden can be worse. Before you book a mountain move between September and May, ask the mover:

  1. Does a chain-law or closure day move your date, and what does that cost you?
  2. Is waiting time billed if the road closes mid-move?
  3. Does the truck carry chains on the routes it will use?

A move that stays in Colorado is still a PUC-regulated local move. A Colorado mover must give a written estimate of the total cost, and the basis for it, at least 24 hours before a scheduled move, unless the move is booked less than 24 hours ahead. The mover cannot charge more than 110 percent of the estimate. (4 CCR 723-6-6608.)

Planning a Golden move

  1. Check the calendarMines move-in dates in August; chain season from September to May.
  2. Check jurisdictionCity of Golden or unincorporated Jefferson County.
  3. Plan the curbAsk the city, or apply for the $50 county permit 48+ hours ahead.
  4. Check the moverAn HHG permit number, a written estimate and a contract.

Weekly tasks are in the moving checklist, and the mover checks are in how to verify a Colorado mover.

Common questions about moving in Golden

When is Colorado School of Mines move-in?

For fall 2026, first-year halls moved in on 15–16 August, second-year apartments opened from 12 August, and The Village at Mines Park from 31 July. 17th Street was one-way from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on both first-year days.

Do I need a permit for a container in Golden?

It depends on jurisdiction. In unincorporated Jefferson County, a container on a public street needs a $50 county permit with 48 hours for review. Inside the City of Golden, ask the city; we did not find its rule.

Do chain laws affect a move west of Golden?

They can. From 1 September to 31 May, commercial vehicles over 16,000 pounds must carry chains on about 1,400 miles of Colorado highway, including I-70. Ask the mover how weather and closure days are handled and billed.

Is a Golden address always in the City of Golden?

No. Some foothill homes with Golden addresses are in unincorporated Jefferson County, where county road rules apply. Check your tax bill or the county assessor's record.
