New to Denver
Moving to Denver: what to do before and after you arrive
Once you live in Colorado, you have 30 days to switch to a Colorado driver license and 90 days to title and register your vehicle. Start Xcel Energy and Denver Water service before you arrive, and if your truck will park on a Denver street, get a city permit first. A mover bringing you from another state works under federal rules, not Colorado's, and Denver's snow season runs from mid-October to late April.

Deadlines after you arrive
New Colorado residents must transfer an out-of-state driver license within 30 days of establishing residency, and title and register a vehicle within 90 days, in person at the county motor vehicle office. You become a resident by working in Colorado, running a business there, or living there for 90 consecutive days. (Colorado DMV, "Welcome to Colorado" and "Vehicle Registration", read 2026-10-20.)
The clock starts when you become a resident, not when your boxes arrive. If you start a job in Denver the week you land, the 30 days start then. Put both dates in your calendar the day you sign the lease or close on the house.
| Task | Deadline or lead time | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Driver license | Within 30 days of becoming a resident | Colorado DMV, in person |
| Vehicle title and registration | Within 90 days of becoming a resident | Your county motor vehicle office |
| Electric and gas (Xcel Energy) | Request from a few business days up to 60 days before; no backdating after you move | Xcel online start, stop or transfer |
| Water (Denver Water) | 2 to 12 business days before the transfer date | Denver Water Customer Care |
| Before you move | USPS change of address |

Before you leave your old state
A move into Colorado from another state is interstate, so Colorado's PUC mover rules do not cover it. A move out of Colorado falls under federal rules. The mover must survey your goods on site or by video unless you waive it in writing, and give a written binding or non-binding estimate with the booklet "Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move". On a non-binding estimate, paying 110 percent at delivery gets your goods unloaded. (49 CFR Part 375, read 2026-09-29.)
On an interstate move, Full Value Protection is the default and must be included in the first estimate; the minimum valuation is $6.00 per pound times the shipment weight. Waiving it leaves released value: no more than 60 cents per pound per article, at no charge. (49 CFR 375, Appendix A, read 2026-09-29.) The valuation guide works through what each option would pay on a damaged item.
An interstate mover needs a USDOT number with household goods authority from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration; look it up in FMCSA's company snapshot before you sign. Verify (FMCSA, read 2026-09-29.)
For price, moveBuddha prints $1,920–$10,880+ for long-distance moves out of Denver. We found no published range for moves into Denver, and distance and weight set the real number either way. The long-distance guide explains binding and non-binding estimates and pickup windows.
- Get at least two written estimates based on a survey, in person or by video.
- Ask for the delivery window in writing. You may arrive days before your goods.
- Carry documents, medicines and anything you need for the first week in your car or luggage.
Utilities and city services
Electricity and gas
Xcel Energy takes online start, stop and transfer requests from a few business days to 60 days before a move, and cannot backdate a request made after you have moved. (Xcel Energy, read 2026-10-20.) Ask your landlord or the seller which company serves the address; most of the metro is Xcel, but confirm it.
Water
Denver Water starts and stops service through Customer Care (303-893-2444, weekdays) and asks for transfer requests two to 12 business days before the transfer date; a meter read is needed to close out an account. (Denver Water, read 2026-10-20.) Suburbs often have their own water utility, so a home in Aurora or Westminster may not be on Denver Water.
Trash, recycling and the boxes
Denver Solid Waste Management collects large items every nine weeks on your trash day: up to five items and ten bags. Furniture, rugs and bagged, wrapped mattresses qualify; appliances do not. Flattened cardboard goes in the purple recycling cart, and a second recycling cart is free through Denver Utilities Online or 311. (Denver Solid Waste, read 2026-10-20.) That second recycling cart is useful in the first weeks, when flattened boxes pile up.
Change your mailing address with USPS online or at a post office before you move. (USPS, read 2026-10-20.)
Arrival day in Denver: where the truck parks
Denver requires a permit to park a moving truck or van in the street. Where there are parking meters you file a Parking Meter Request; otherwise a Right-of-Way Street Occupancy request. Street occupancy permits take at least five days to review. Denver meter bagging requests take up to 72 hours to process, and DOTI asks for them at least one week ahead. (Denver DOTI, read 2026-09-29.)
An interstate truck is often a full-size trailer that cannot fit on a residential street. Ask the mover whether it will shuttle your goods in a smaller truck, and whether that shuttle costs extra. Then decide who files the street permit, and file at least a week ahead.
- Ask the truck sizeCan it reach your door, or will it shuttle?
- Check the blockMeters or no meters decides the permit type.
- File the permitA week ahead for meters, 5+ days of review otherwise.
- Building rulesBook the elevator or dock and send the insurance certificate.
Suburbs set their own rules; see the service-area guide.
Snow season and mountain roads
Denver's average first measurable snow falls on 19 October and the last on 28 April. The 1991–2020 seasonal normal is 49.0 inches, with 8.8 inches in March. (NWS Boulder, read 2026-09-29.) March is one of the snowiest months, so a spring move is not automatically a dry one.
If you are arriving from the west on I-70, your mover's truck crosses the mountains. From 1 September to 31 May, commercial vehicles over 16,000 pounds must carry chains on about 1,400 miles of Colorado highway, including sections of I-70, CO 9 and US 40, 50, 160, 285 and 550. The fine for not carrying them is $500. (CDOT, read 2026-09-29.) Ask the mover how a closure or chain-law day changes your delivery window, and whether waiting costs you.
Choosing where to live, as a moving question
We do not rank neighborhoods. What we can say is how the choice changes moving day:
- Inside Denver or a suburb. The City and County of Denver has its DOTI street permits; each suburb is a separate city with its own rules and often its own water and trash service.
- High-rise or house. Downtown and LoDo buildings usually need an elevator booking and an insurance certificate; houses need street space and a walk from the truck.
- Which county. It decides your vehicle office and sometimes your road rules. Some "Littleton" and "Aurora" mailing addresses are in unincorporated county land.
- Commute direction. Drive the route at rush hour before you sign. We publish no commute figures we cannot source.
The service-area guide lists twelve metro places and what differs in each, and there are dedicated guides for Boulder, Broomfield and Golden.
