Moving in Broomfield: container permits and street placement rules
In Broomfield, a moving container or POD left on a public street for more than 24 hours needs a permit from the city and county's Engineering Division, valid for up to 30 days. On your own driveway it needs none. Broomfield is a consolidated city and county, so one government issues that permit wherever you live inside its boundary.
Our form accepts Broomfield ZIPs. We have not signed a partner mover yet; if none covers your ZIP and date, we tell you by email. Rules below are from Broomfield's Engineering Division instructions, revised 30 July 2024, read 2026-10-20.

One government, one permit office
Most Denver suburbs are cities inside one or more counties, so the address on a letter does not always tell you whose road rules apply. Broomfield is different. It is the City and County of Broomfield, a single government, and it is not part of Adams, Boulder, Jefferson or Weld County. The container instructions are issued under that one name by its Engineering Division (303-438-6380, One DesCombes Drive).
For a move, the practical point is simple: if your address is inside Broomfield, there is no separate county layer to check for street placement. Compare Arvada or Westminster, which straddle county lines (see the service-area table).
Container and POD permits
In Broomfield, a storage container or POD may sit on a public street only with an Engineering Division permit, required when it stays more than 24 hours; the permit lasts up to 30 days (180 with an active building permit). No permit is needed on a driveway or other private property. (Broomfield Engineering Division, rev. 7/30/24, read 2026-10-20.)
| Question | Broomfield's answer |
|---|---|
| On a driveway or private property? | No permit required |
| On the street, 24 hours or less? | The permit is required for more than 24 hours; confirm short stays with the Engineering Division |
| On the street, more than 24 hours? | Engineering Division permit, issued before the container is placed |
| How long it lasts | Up to 30 days; up to 180 with an active building permit; renewal at the Traffic Engineer's discretion |
| Maximum size | 160 square feet or 8 feet wide |
| Who applies | The form takes an owner (primary party) and the container company (secondary party) |
Where a container may sit
The instructions set distances from things on the street, and the distance depends on the container's height: 6 feet or taller, or under 6 feet. Most moving containers are taller than 6 feet, but check yours.
| Keep away from | 6 ft or taller | Under 6 ft |
|---|---|---|
| Fire hydrant | 15 ft | 15 ft |
| Intersection or crosswalk | 30 ft | 20 ft |
| Public or private driveway | 10 ft | 5 ft |
| Flashing beacon, stop or yield sign | 30 ft | 30 ft |
| Community mailbox | 30 ft | 30 ft |
The container also may not block a sidewalk, tree lawn, travel lane, no-parking zone, temporary loading zone or alley, sit over a storm drain inlet, block a way in or out, or restrict sight lines. It needs reflectors of at least 4 inches on each side, or 36-inch reflective cones. The City Traffic Engineer can set other conditions. (Broomfield Engineering Division.)
Moving trucks and driveways
The Broomfield instructions we read cover containers and roll-off dumpsters, not a moving truck parked for a few hours. We did not find a Broomfield permit written for moving trucks, so we do not describe one. If a truck will stand on the street, read the posted signs, keep it out of the places listed above, and call the Engineering Division at 303-438-6380 if it will block a lane or stay overnight.
The move itself is a local Colorado move. A Colorado mover must give a written estimate of the total cost, and the basis for it, at least 24 hours before a scheduled move, unless the move is booked less than 24 hours ahead. The mover cannot charge more than 110 percent of the estimate. (4 CCR 723-6-6608.) Check the mover's HHG permit number with the PUC before you sign; the steps are in how to verify a Colorado mover.
Container or movers?
Broomfield's 30-day permit window shapes the choice. A container that stays on the street while you pack slowly, or while you wait between homes, has to fit inside the permit and be renewed at the Traffic Engineer's discretion. On a driveway, the limit is your container company's rental term, not the city's.
- Container on the driveway: no city permit; you load, the company moves it.
- Container on the street: permit before placement, setbacks, reflectors, 30 days.
- Full-service movers: no container to place; the crew loads and drives the same day.
The full comparison, with published container prices, is in movers vs moving containers, and storage between homes is in moving and storage.

Common questions about moving in Broomfield
Do I need a permit for a POD in Broomfield?
Only if it goes on a public street for more than 24 hours. Then you need an Engineering Division permit before it is placed, valid for up to 30 days. A container on your driveway or other private property needs no permit.
How close to a hydrant can a container be?
No closer than 15 feet. A container 6 feet or taller must also be 30 feet from an intersection or crosswalk and 10 feet from a driveway; shorter containers 20 and 5 feet.
Does my county also need to approve it?
No separate county applies. Broomfield is a consolidated city and county, so its Engineering Division is the one office for street placement inside Broomfield.
Do I need a permit to park a moving truck in Broomfield?
We did not find one written for moving trucks. Read the posted signs, keep the truck clear of hydrants, corners and lanes, and call the Engineering Division at 303-438-6380 if it will block traffic or stay overnight.
