Costs and estimates
How much do movers cost in Denver?
Named Denver sources print $279–$1,100 for a local one-bedroom move, $625–$2,400 for two bedrooms and $1,200–$3,600 for three in 2026. Two movers and a truck run $130–$220 an hour. These are published third-party figures, not quotes; your written estimate sets your price.

How much should I budget for a one-bedroom move?
Plan around the middle of the published range, about $650 (the median of 5 sources), and more for stairs, a long carry or packing. The low end assumes an easy, short move.

Do movers charge by the hour or by distance?
Inside Colorado, local moves are usually billed by crew and hour, sometimes with a minimum and a start fee. Moves to another state are priced by weight or volume and distance under federal rules.
What makes a moving estimate increase?
Items not on the inventory, stairs or a long carry that was not disclosed, waiting for an elevator or parking, packing that was not finished, and added services such as a piano or storage. In Colorado the final charge cannot exceed 110% of the written estimate unless you both sign a change.

How many moving quotes should I compare?
Two or three written estimates built on the same inventory are enough to see whether one is out of line. Compare the hourly rate, minimum, start fee, extra charges, packing and valuation line by line, not just the total.
Booking and hiring movers
How far in advance should I book movers?
Six weeks or more is comfortable, and longer for May through September, weekends or the last days of a month, when published premiums run 20–30%. With less notice, book the mover and file for truck parking first.

How do I check a Colorado moving company?
For a move inside Colorado, the mover needs a household goods permit from the Colorado PUC. Its ads must show "CO PUC permit no." and a physical address, and you can search the number in the PUC permit search. For an interstate move, check its USDOT number and household goods authority with FMCSA.
What is the difference between an estimate and a binding estimate?
Inside Colorado, the mover must give a written estimate at least 24 hours ahead and cannot charge more than 110% of it. On an interstate move, a binding estimate fixes the price for the listed goods and services, while a non-binding estimate approximates it; paying 110% of a non-binding estimate at delivery gets your goods unloaded.

What should I check before signing a moving contract?
In Colorado the contract must show the PUC permit number, itemize the costs, and name at least two accepted payment methods, and you sign a consumer advisement before work starts. Check the price basis, every extra charge, the valuation option, and the cancellation terms.
Is valuation the same as moving insurance?
No. Valuation is the mover's liability for your goods. In Colorado the contract must offer released value at 60 cents per pound per article, or full replacement cost. On an interstate move, Full Value Protection is the default unless you waive it in writing.
What are warning signs when hiring a mover?
No PUC permit number (or no USDOT number for an interstate move), a price given without any look at your goods, a large cash deposit, an estimate far below the others for the same inventory, and pressure to sign blank or incomplete paperwork. None of these proves fraud, but each is a reason to ask more or walk away.

Choosing the kind of help
Should I hire movers or rent a truck?
Renting a truck trades a crew-hour bill for your own time, fuel, the truck size and the Denver street permit. moveBuddha prints $172–$1,566 for a local truck-rental move. A middle option is a rental truck plus a loading crew.

Is a moving container cheaper than movers?
Sometimes, for a long move or when you need storage in between, because you do the loading. On a public street a container usually needs a permit: Broomfield requires one past 24 hours, and unincorporated Jefferson County charges $50.
Can I hire movers just to load or unload?
Yes. Labor-only crews load a truck or container you rented, usually by the hour with a minimum. Colorado defines a mover by transportation, so check what permit and liability cover a crew with no truck has.

What if I need storage between homes?
You can have the mover store your goods (Colorado lists storage as an itemized accessorial service), rent a self-storage unit, or keep a container. MoveAdvisor prints $100–$300 a month for storage in Denver.

Do office moves follow the same rules as home moves?
Not necessarily. Colorado's mover rules are written for household goods, meaning property used in a dwelling. Office moves add building insurance certificates, after-hours windows and IT work, so get the scope in writing.

Apartments and homes
How do I prepare for a move in an apartment building?
Get both buildings' move rules first: allowed hours, the elevator or dock booking, any fee or deposit, and whether a certificate of insurance is required. Then book the mover for a time that fits both, and send it the insurance wording.
Do I need to reserve an elevator?
If your building has a freight or service elevator and requires a booking, yes, usually through management. Ask how long the window is and what happens if it runs over.

What should I do if my building has limited loading access?
Ask management where movers load and for how long, check the clearance height, and tell the mover the walk from the truck to the door. A long carry adds time on every trip, and some movers charge for it separately.

How should I prepare furniture and appliances?
Empty drawers unless the mover says otherwise. Take apart beds and tables you can manage, and bag and label the hardware. Defrost and dry the freezer 24–48 hours ahead. Disconnect the washer and gas dryer, or ask the mover whether it does this. Tell the mover about anything that must be hoisted or will not fit through a turn.

What should I do before handing over my old keys?
Clean, photograph and video every empty room, do a walkthrough if you can, return every key and fob with a receipt, and give your forwarding address in writing. Colorado law gives a landlord one month, or up to 60 days if the lease says so, to return the deposit with a statement of anything kept.

Denver-area logistics
How should I plan for parking near my pickup or delivery address?
In Denver, a truck parked on the street needs a DOTI permit: a Parking Meter Request on a metered block (at least a week ahead), or a Right-of-Way Street Occupancy request elsewhere (at least 5 days of review). Suburbs set their own rules.
More: parking rules by city
What should I consider when moving during a Colorado winter?
Denver's average snow season runs from 19 October to 28 April. Ask how the mover reschedules for snow, clear walks at both ends, protect floors, and keep anything that can freeze in your car. Moving trucks heading into the mountains must carry chains from September through May.

What changes when I move between Denver and a suburb?
It is still a local Colorado move, usually billed by the hour, so drive time counts. You deal with two sets of street rules, and water and trash providers often change at the city line.
What changes when moving out of Colorado?
Federal rules replace Colorado's: a USDOT-registered mover with household goods authority, a survey, a binding or non-binding estimate, the "Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move" booklet, and Full Value Protection by default.
I just moved to Colorado. What do I have to do?
Transfer your out-of-state driver license within 30 days of establishing residency, and title and register vehicles within 90 days at your county motor vehicle office. Residency starts when you work or run a business here, or after 90 days living here.
Packing and special situations
How do I pack a kitchen?
Pack it last, except for a one-box "last week kitchen". Stand plates on edge in small boxes with paper between them, wrap glasses one at a time, sleeve knives in cardboard, and empty and dry the fridge the day before.
More: room-by-room packing
How do I pack fragile items?
Use small, strong boxes, wrap each item separately, fill empty space so nothing shifts, and label the box "fragile" with its destination room. Stand mirrors and framed art on edge. For valuable or irreplaceable pieces, ask whether the mover will pack or crate them, and check your valuation option.
How do I move with pets?
Keep pets in a closed room, with a sign on the door, or with a friend or boarding on moving day, so they don't slip out of propped doors. Bring their food, water, medicines and records in your car, and update microchip and license details with the new address.

How do I move with children?
Arrange childcare for the loading and unloading hours if you can, since doors stay open and the crew carries heavy items. Pack a box of each child's familiar things to open first, and transfer school records ahead of time.

What will movers not take?
Movers commonly refuse hazardous materials such as paint, propane, fuel and chemicals, and many recommend you carry cash, jewelry, documents and medicines yourself. Ask each mover for its own list before moving day.
