Moving in Boulder: CU dates, parking zones and the rules that apply
Three things make a Boulder move different from a Denver one. CU Boulder's move-in week fills the streets in mid-August. Many neighborhoods sit inside Neighborhood Parking Permit zones with their own time limits. And shared student-style houses are more common since the city stopped enforcing limits on unrelated roommates in 2024. The moving itself is a local Colorado move under the PUC, billed by crew and hour.
Our form accepts Boulder ZIPs (803). We have not signed a partner mover yet; if none covers your ZIP and date, we tell you by email.

Boulder in one table
| Topic | Boulder | Why it matters on moving day |
|---|---|---|
| Peak week | CU residence-hall move-in, 16–18 August 2026 (15–19 for two halls) | Crowded streets, booked crews and higher demand in mid-August |
| Street parking | Neighborhood Parking Permit zones, each with its own hours and time limits | A truck or helper's car can be ticketed in a zone; plan where vehicles stand |
| Household type | Unrelated-roommate limits no longer enforced (HB24-1007, 2024) | More shared houses, so more partial moves and split inventories |
| Distance | About 26.7 miles from downtown Denver, mostly via US 36 | Drive time between addresses is usually billed at the hourly rate |
| Regulator | Colorado PUC, same as Denver | Same permit, written-estimate and 110% rules |
CU Boulder's move-in week
CU Boulder's fall 2026 residence hall move-in ran 16–18 August, with Bear Creek and Code Talker halls 15–19 August. (CU Boulder University Housing, read 2026-09-29.)
Residence-hall move-in is the part CU publishes. Students moving into off-campus housing arrive for the same semester, so expect crews, rental trucks and curb space near campus to be in demand around those dates. Two practical consequences follow:
- Book early or move on either side. If your date is flexible, a move a week before or after the residence-hall dates avoids the busiest streets. Ask each mover whether its August rates differ from its September rates.
- Plan the truck spot in writing. Near campus, decide before the day where the truck stands, how far the carry is and who checks the signs on the block.
Parking zones and the moving truck
Boulder's Neighborhood Parking Permit zones set their own hours and time limits. From 1 January 2026, residents get one permit per licensed driver, 25 free one-day Day Passes per household a year (assignable up to two weeks ahead, one vehicle each) and up to two paid Flex Permits. (City of Boulder, read 2026-10-20.) The city also says a residential permit does not guarantee a space in front of the home.
What that means for a move:
- Find your zoneCheck whether your block is in an NPP zone and what its hours and time limits are.
- Plan the vehiclesHelpers' cars and a rental truck count against posted limits like any other vehicle.
- Ask about passesAsk Parking Services whether a Day Pass can cover your truck; we have not seen the city say either way.
- Read the signsCheck posted restrictions on the day; a permit never overrides a loading or no-parking zone.
We did not find a Boulder permit written specifically for parking a moving truck in the street, as Denver has. The city's right-of-way permits we read are aimed at construction work by licensed contractors, so we do not describe them as a moving permit. For a long stay at the curb, call the City of Boulder's Access and Parking Services at 303-413-7300 before you book. (City of Boulder, number read 2026-10-20.)
Shared houses and the occupancy change
After Colorado HB24-1007 (signed 15 April 2024), Boulder stopped enforcing occupancy limits based on how many unrelated people live together. It still enforces the property maintenance code: each bedroom at least 70 square feet, and 50 square feet per occupant of a bedroom. (City of Boulder, read 2026-10-20.)
For movers, the effect is practical rather than legal. A house shared by four or five unrelated adults often moves in pieces: one person leaves, another arrives, and two share a truck. If that is your move:
- Separate the inventories. Give the mover a list of only your items, and label them, so the estimate and the 110% cap apply to your goods.
- Agree who pays for what. If roommates share one crew, put one name on the contract and settle the split between yourselves first. The mover's contract is with the person who signs it.
- Check the bedroom size before you sign a lease. The 70-square-foot bedroom minimum still applies, which also decides what furniture will fit.
Moving between Denver and Boulder
A move from Denver to Boulder, or the other way, stays inside Colorado, so it is regulated by the PUC, not by federal interstate rules. A Colorado mover must give a written estimate of the total cost, and the basis for it, at least 24 hours before a scheduled move, unless the move is booked less than 24 hours ahead. The mover cannot charge more than 110 percent of the estimate. (4 CCR 723-6-6608.)
The roughly 27-mile drive along US 36 is the main difference from an in-town Denver move. Most Denver sources bill local moves by the hour, so the time between addresses is usually on the clock. Ask each mover three things:
- Is travel time between the two addresses billed at the hourly rate?
- Is there a separate travel or truck fee from the mover's yard?
- What time of day do they expect to drive, and how long do they plan for it?
Two parking regimes also apply: Denver's DOTI rules at the Denver end, and Boulder's zones at the other.
How a Boulder move is priced
We have not found a published price list specific to Boulder that we could verify, so we do not print one. Denver price ranges from named sources are on the Denver moving cost guide. For a Boulder move, expect the same hourly structure plus the items that are particular to Boulder:
- Drive time between Denver and Boulder, where the move crosses the two.
- Long carries and stairs in older houses and walk-up apartment buildings near campus; Colorado law lists these as accessorial services the mover must itemize.
- Date premium in August, if the mover charges one. Ask rather than assume.
Winter matters too. Denver's average first measurable snow falls on 19 October and the last on 28 April. The 1991–2020 seasonal normal is 49.0 inches, with 8.8 inches in March. Boulder sits at the foot of the Flatirons, and a move further west joins mountain highways where CDOT's chain-carry rules bind large trucks from September to May. (NWS Boulder; CDOT.)

Common questions about moving in Boulder
When is the busiest time to move in Boulder?
Mid-August. CU Boulder's fall 2026 residence-hall move-in ran 16–18 August, with two halls open 15–19 August and students moving off campus arrive for the same semester. A week either side is usually easier to book.
Do I need a permit to park a moving truck in Boulder?
We did not find a Boulder permit written for moving trucks. Many neighborhoods are Neighborhood Parking Permit zones with posted time limits. Call Boulder's Access and Parking Services at 303-413-7300 if the truck will stand on the street for long.
Is a move from Denver to Boulder a long-distance move?
No. It stays inside Colorado, so the PUC's rules apply: a written estimate at least 24 hours before the move and a charge capped at 110% of it. The drive along US 36 is usually billed as hourly time.
Can roommates split one moving crew?
Yes, but the contract is with whoever signs it. List each person's items, agree the split among yourselves, and make sure the estimate covers everything that will go on the truck.
